HKEX Names Graeme Farrell as Group Chief Risk Officer

Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited has appointed Graeme Farrell as its new Group Chief Risk Officer, effective 12 January 2026.

According to the announcement, Farrell will replace Richard Wise, who is departing HKEX after five years to spend more time with his family. Farrell will oversee the exchange group’s full risk management framework, spanning financial risk, quantitative risk, technology risk, and enterprise risk functions.

He will report directly to HKEX Chief Executive Officer Bonnie Y Chan and will join the organisation’s Management Committee. HKEX said the appointment supports its focus on strengthening governance, risk oversight, and operational resilience across its markets.

Farrell brings more than 25 years of global risk management experience. He most recently served as Group Chief Risk Officer at Interactive Brokers, where he led risk identification, assessment, and monitoring across the firm’s global operations.

His previous roles include Head of Operational Risk & Resiliency at AQR Capital and several senior risk positions at JPMorgan Chase, where he was Global Head of Operational Risk Management Framework. He also held leadership roles in Hong Kong with Nomura as Chief Operating Officer for Asia ex-Japan Equities Trading.

HKEX added that Farrell’s appointment reflects the importance of advanced risk governance within global market infrastructure. The exchange highlighted his experience across London, Hong Kong, and New York as a key factor in supporting its international strategy.

Farrell holds degrees in accounting and law, as well as international financial analysis, from Newcastle University in the UK. He will relocate to Hong Kong with his family ahead of taking up the role.
